Greetings from Our Backyard Foundation,
Message from the President
2015 was another successful year for Our Backyard Foundation and much of this success came from Dawn & Sadie and their efforts in pediatric arthritis and Tami & Hunter and their efforts for families who will or have delivered a preemie.
In 2015 Our Backyard Foundation was able to help several families in need of financial help. While Our Backyard Foundation was successful with raising the funds for these local individuals and families, I saw a much different value on our efforts. I saw Our Backyard Foundation dedicating their time to share smiles with family and friends of those that are hurting and in need.
In one case, Our Backyard Foundation was able to provide funds to a family whose son is battling brain cancer. However, it was at the event where I saw the true value of Our Backyard Foundation's work. The love, the laughter, the smiles and the time this family was able to share with friends and family was wonderful to see. They were able to put aside the pain and hurt for a few moments in time and just have fun. It was special to sit down with the family and enjoy dinner together and to be able to share some laughs and smiles with them as well. Watching that family laugh and SMILE lets us know that we have succeeded and that time is priceless!!
As Our Backyard Foundation enters into a new year, we look forward to continuing to raise funds for those in need, but more importantly we look forward to the SMILE that we see from those in need.
On behalf of the Backyard Foundation board members, we thank all of you who have volunteered your time, effort, money and Smiles to make us successful.
Please join us for our Upcoming Events
Thursday April 7th – Blessing for Babies annual Poker for Preemies Tournament
Saturday May 7th – Wine & Food Pairing

On Saturday, April 27th, forty two of Central Florida's best hackers and shankers competed in our 2nd Annual "Under the Lights" Golf Tournament, held at The Links at 434. The two-player, best-ball teams played a nine hole format, with the top four teams battling for the trophy in a one-hole shoot out. Team Oslund won in dramatic form by sinking a par putt. In the end, Our Backyard Foundation was truly the big winner, raising over $2000 for the event. To everyone involved, we sincerely thank you!
Our Backyard Foundation's success depends entirely upon the help of our generous sponsors, dedicated volunteers and gracious friends! Once again, Steve Smith came through with a donation of Artisan Crafted beers; the Gilpin family donated a bountiful collection of raffle items; and the Yantorni, Oslund, and Rosello families adeptly handled the volunteer positions.
Sadly, this year's "Under the Lights" tournament marked the final day of operations for The Links at 434, and we will begin looking for a new course for next year's event. No worries though; we promise to make it just as fun and exciting as the first two! Stay tuned for golf tournament updates, and other upcoming OBF events; and be sure to visit us at https/www.facebook.com/groups/OBYF2012/

On Saturday March 2nd 2013, Our Backyard Foundation and 70 guests enjoyed live music, delicious wine & craft beers; and delectable appetizers at Diva’s Off the Park in Winter Park, to benefit the Strausheim family.
Four year-old Shane was born with Down Syndrome and a congenital heart defect. Shortly after his 1st birthday, Shane was also diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension, and has been on oxygen ever since. Scroll down for Shane's story...
With the support of those who attended Wine with a Heart, as well as those who made individual donations, Our Backyard Foundation was able to present the Strausheims with a $3000.00 check, which we hope will shed some light on the journey ahead of them. We will continue to keep in touch with the Strausheims, and pray for a positive outcome for both Shane and Leon.
See the Photos of the event here
On Behalf of Our Backyard Foundation, and of the Strausheim Family, we thank you for you kind and generous donations!

The following is written by Sharon Bogan who is the Location Director - BrightStart Pediatrics in Sanford Florida.
"This is Shane! I want to tell you about his family and their current struggles and I hope that you are as inspired as I. I work at a Prescribed Pediatric Extended Care center for medically fragile children. Shane is a 4-year old boy with Down Syndrome who attends our center. Shane was born 1/16/2009 with Down Syndrome and a few holes in his heart. He was also diagnosed shortly after his 1st birthday with Pulmonary Hypertension and has been on oxygen ever since. The doctors here in Orlando are not able to operate on his heart due to the Pulmonary Hypertension and the complexities that presents. Thankfully, the family was able to find a doctor in Boston that specializes in cases like Shane’s and has agreed to see him and evaluate his case. Shane’s care and accommodations will be paid for by insurance but his parents expenses are not.
Unfortunately, the day after receiving the wonderful news that Shane was accepted in Boston, the family received devastating news about his father Leon. Leon had to go to the hospital due to dizziness and other symptoms. The doctors found a tumor and biopsy results unfortunately revealed a devastating diagnosis; Leon has Anaplastic Astocytoma, BRAIN CANCER. Leon will be starting a 2-year chemo therapy regiment along with radiation. He is 28years old!
Due to his health issues, Leon has not been able to work in some time and Shane’s mother Candace has been working hard trying to take care of her two men. Candace works for a pool company and during the off season, has a hard time getting the hours she needs to make ends meet. Despite all of this adversity, Candace remains strong and stead fast in caring for the loves of her life. This family doesn’t have much in the way of monetary things but what they do have is abundant love. Leon and Candace have loved and cared for Shane from the moment he came into their lives. What they can’t provide in ‘things’, they more than make up for with LOVE.
During the midst of all of the excitement for Shane and devastation from Leon’s diagnosis, Candace also found out she ispregnant! They are very excited about the new addition to the family. Their excitement about the new baby and Shane’s surgery are unfortunately dampened by the daunting years ahead for Leon and his treatment. Candace is the type of person that doesn’tlike to ask for help but this family is in dire need of help and prayers right now. "
Our Backyard Foundation learned of Shane and will be hosting "Wine with a Heart" event to benefit Shane and his family, in hopes that we can in some small way help with their needs.
Our Backyard Foundation has teamed up with Diva Wine & Desserts in Winter Park for a fun-filled afternoon of Wine, Live Music & Great Food to Benefit the Strausheim family.
You will be greeted at the door with a glass of champagne and hor d’oeuvres while you mingle with friends & family. A wine connoisseur will share his knowledge of 6 fine wines paired with Diva’s fine foods. We will also have 6 craft beers to taste as well.

The inaugural year of Our Backyard Foundation is coming to an end. We raised over $10,000 for 3 local charities, and filled a huge truck with donations of every kind, and delivered them directly to Hurricane Sandy victims. All in all, it was a very good Year One! We have 4 great events planned for 2013. The specific dates are still being determined, but I can give you a peak into the events in the making... In March we are planning another food pairing. We will have our Par 3, "Under the Stars" golf event in May, and you'll have to keep an eye out for our summer event! We are planning a family event that will be a major blockbuster. Our fall event will be something we have not yet done....Bowling! Who doesn't like to bowl?! Check out our website and Facebook Page for details.
My deepest gratitude goes out to those who have supported our efforts, and to the seven other Founding Boardmember-families who have been instrumental to the success of OBF. Here's to a great new year!

With the help of many Our Backyard Foundationwas able to load a 16 foot truck and deliver to Staten Island. below is a letter of thanks.
"I would like to thank Our Backyard Foundation, especially Clint and Vickie Carbonneau, for being part of a huge grass roots effort to help rescue, rebuild and restore my beloved Staten Island.
Fortunately, me and my family were lucky enough to escape the wrath of Superstorm Sandy without any real damage. But my surrounding neighborhoods have been devastated.
Homes just literally washed away, lives lost and families in ruin. I have been volunteering day and night along with the rest of my Staten Island community to help our fellow neighbors try to make sense and progress of what this storm has left. It seems as though if not for the efforts of regular citizens, both local and out of state, not much would be getting down to help these families.
We still do not have an accurate body count of our perished. And Staten Island makes up at least half of the death toll from this storm.
Our government agencies are failing our people. But the amount of compassion and care from citizens is immense. Without you, we could not make it.
After receiving a call from VH1's Carrie Keagan asking what is needed and where to transport, I realized that our plight is being heard across the nation. So if our government won't help, at least we have each other. Soon after that call, Clint reached out and contacted me to coordinate the drop off and confirm the address. Never once was there a hint of strain or stress to maneuver through our beaten streets. He and his wife Vickie took it in stride and delivered the much needed donated supplies with a smile and a hug. Thankfully, the day of the delivery the temperature was up because I don't think Clint's toes would have survived in his sandals.
They helped us unload and sort and any supplies that we couldn't use, I gave Clint a secondary spot and he and Vickie were off and on their way with a smile.
I can not stress enough that knowing that other communities are willing to go to the lengths that your community has gives our victims hope and faith that things will get better and they will not be forgotten.
God bless you all.
Sincere and deep gratitude,
